Symposium: The Future of Meat

On Sat. Nov. 12, the Goethe-Institut Chicago will be presenting a day-long symposium at The Plant exploring the past, present, and future of meat. Convening speakers whose perspectives are informed by religious ethics, environmental policy, critical animal studies, and the science of creating alternative meat, this event will consider the impacts of the meat industry and suggest alternatives for its future.

The event, called the Future of Meat, starts at 2pm and will include a keynote speaker, panel discussion, and plant-based refreshments from Nature's Fynd and Back of the Yards Algae Sciences. There will be a break for dinner on your own: MeetStop by Ste. Martaen will be popping up in the taproom with vegan comfort food, and Whiner's pizza kitchen will be slinging pies as usual.

Then the program continues at 7pm with a screening of The Killing Floor, the 1984 film about the struggle to establish an interracial labor union in the meatpacking industry in the years leading up to the Chicago race riot of 1919. Full details are here; the program is free and open to the public, and RSVPs are requested.

Join us for the panel or the film or both, and in any case be sure to stop on by Whiner Beer Co.’s taproom at The Plant for eats, drinks, and good times. Pizza kitchen will be open until 10pm. Learn more here.
